Volvo Introduces New Generation of Child Safety Seats

Volvo has been focused on child-safety for a long time, becoming the first automaker to crash-test child safety seats all the way back in the 1960s. Continuing in that tradition, Volvo is introducing a range of three new child seats that focus on good design, child comfort, and overall convenience. In keeping with the stated goal of no fatalities or serious injuries in Volvo vehicles by 2020, the introduction of these child safety seats is another step in the right direction to achieving it. Take a look at the video below for more information.

It’s easy enough to own and properly install a child seat, but actually getting children to sit in them, especially as they get older, can be its own challenge. One way Volvo chose to approach this problem is by making its child seats much more comfortable. They are made with a more breathable upholstery comprised of 80% wool textile, making the seats smooth, highly durable, and better suited to both hot and cold climates. The seats are slimmer overall and aim to increase legroom for children as well.

The three seats offered:

  • Infant Seat: reward-facing, suitable for children up to 13 kilograms (about 28 pounds) or 1 year of age.
  • Child Seat: reward-facing, suitable for children 9 months up to 6 years of age.
  • Booster Seat: forward-facing, suitable for children who have outgrown the reward-facing seats, ages 3 up to 10 years.

“We understand that many people find child safety in cars a complex and sometimes confusing subject. We have focused for many years on communicating clear guidelines around how child seats should be used and the correct way to install them. We believe that children will be more comfortable in our rearward-facing new seat and that this will encourage parents to keep their children rearward-facing for longer. This will have a direct impact on overall child safety and support our Vision 2020, where no one will be killed or seriously injured in a Volvo car by the year 2020.” – Lotta Jakobsson, Adjunct Professor, PhD and Senior Technical Leader, Injury Prevention at Volvo Cars Safety Centre

These safety seats will become available in select markets beginning in June of this year, with additional availability opening up with time.
